i don't think this is totally unrelated. i think Dr Horrible is probably a very good approximation of just how good the shakespeare/de vere stuff was in it's time. the early stuff was dramedy for the court, undoubtedly brimming with a similarly raucous style and cartoon energy, and although we can't ever know exactly how the early plays were staged, i think they were probably not unlike this in terms of their overall quality and enjoyability.
